Liberation Paddle Out: A Powerful Day of Community, Healing, and Ocean Connection

This past weekend, I had the incredible honor of participating as a safety paddler at the Liberation Paddle Out, a deeply moving event organized by Black Surf Santa Cruz. The day was more than just a paddle—it was a powerful celebration of the ocean, community, diversity, and the ongoing work toward inclusivity and healing in our local surf culture.

A Community Coming Together

Black Surf Santa Cruz did an amazing job bringing people together from all walks of life to celebrate our shared love for the ocean. Their thoughtful, intentional organization created a space where surfers, families, and allies could gather in solidarity and joy, while also honoring the importance of justice, representation, and cultural healing.

The Liberation Paddle Out wasn’t just about getting in the water—it was about reclaiming space, building community, and creating waves of change. Being part of this event was truly impactful. It reminded me how vital it is to continue supporting organizations that are doing the work to make surfing—and the ocean—a more welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

The Mission of Black Surf Santa Cruz

Black Surf Santa Cruz’s mission is close to my heart: to promote mental, physical, spiritual, and communal healing through surfing, recreation, education, and wellness. Their leadership has sparked important conversations and created tangible opportunities for diversity, inclusivity, and belonging in our lineup and beyond.

Their work addresses the local urgency to break down barriers in surf culture and to open the doors for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) to feel seen, supported, and celebrated in the ocean.
