The Stoke of Surfing Steamer Lane 🌊

There’s something special about surfing the Lane.

Most days, the lineup is packed. Surfers stacked from the rocks at the Slot to Middle Peak and down into Indicators. Everyone battling for position, trying to find their waves. It’s part of what makes the Lane iconic, but it also makes moments of space out there incredibly rare.

That’s why getting to compete at the Lane feels like such a treat.

During contests, there are usually only six of us in the water at a time. Even if it’s just for 15–20 minutes, it feels completely different. Suddenly, there’s room to breathe, room to move, room to really surf.

You can settle into the rhythm of the ocean instead of fighting the crowd.

For me, that’s where the real stoke comes from.

Not from winning or results, but from those few moments where everything slows down. Paddling as hard as I can to get back out and get my wave count, hearing cheers from the cliffs, trading waves with other surfers who are just as excited to be there.

It’s a reminder of why I fell in love with surfing in the first place.

The Lane has an energy that’s hard to explain unless you’ve surfed there: power, history, community, chaos, and every once in a while, pure magic.

And when you get one of those uncrowded sessions with clean waves rolling through… that feeling stays with you long after the paddle in.
