Discover Awe, Recipe for Recovery

In life, we often find ourselves faced with unexpected challenges, moments that test our resilience and force us to adapt. I had one of these moments this winter when I broke my foot the night before leaving for Kauai.

Excitement coursing through my veins, I could almost taste the saltwater on my lips and feel the rush of the waves beneath me. But fate had other plans and came in the form of a broken foot. Disappointment washed over me, threatening to drown my spirits. How could I not surf or even walk on the beach in Kauai? It was a bummer, but I refused to let my broken foot define my experience.

I chose to spend this healing time experiencing the AWE of Kauai. My partner, Michael, is a medical doctor and researches the healing benefits of awe. I focused on the awe-inspiring: the mountains, the sunrises and sunsets, the rainbows, and the soft, warm sprinkles on my skin. I spent countless hours on the sand observing the extraordinary in the ordinary. It was a surprisingly awesome perspective to be on the beach rather than in the lineup.

While Michael rode the waves, I got creative. I came up with a variety of deep core exercises and stretches that I could do either sitting or on one foot. I dove deep into my daily breathwork practice and 6-minute plank. I was determined to keep my body and mind happy and strong. I went swimming with my taped-up injured foot, so I was extremely careful where and how far I went out. I had many turtle encounters and even an eagle ray. I discovered hidden gems under the sea that I never took the time to explore before. Swimming became the highlight of my days!

A friend gave me a paint-by-number art piece, which happened to have my old dog Hula and my favorite surf shack in it. This was something I hadn’t done since I was a kid, and I found myself looking forward to this meditative experience every day. I told myself that by the time I was done with painting, my foot would be healed. Between my daily swimming, exercises, painting, and appreciating awe in the every day, I was able to stay sane and happy.

Through the pain and uncertainty, I was reminded to embrace the beauty of the present moment and to find strength in the midst of a challenge. I emerged from the injury stronger in areas which I may not have taken the time to work on if I was one hundred percent. I feel a deep appreciation and awe for my body, its ability to heal a broken bone, and my mind's ability to stay positive and creative in a challenging situation.

Life may not always go according to plan, but in the moments of adversity, we can choose how we react and have the opportunity to discover new awe-inspiring parts of ourselves.

Looking ahead to November 2024, Michael and I are excited to announce our upcoming
